Details

The vision for this project is to create a highly refined and unified collection of minimalist townhouses. The design combines strong rectilinear forms with a refined material palette, providing clear delineation softened by the tactility of finishes. The integration of landscaping onto and surrounding the building is conducive to reducing the overall mass and blurring the building edges.

The townhouses are located on a corner site, providing both the opportunity and challenge of responding to two street interfaces and a prominent corner. The visual impact at street level is softened by curving the fence line and planting a vine to cover it entirely. A similar approach is adopted to soften the upper-level roofline with planting running the length of the building and continuing around the corner.

The building also features floor-to-ceiling butt-jointed glazing to create a sense of openness and connection with the surrounding streetscape. The result is both bold in its appearance and inviting in its transparency. Windows visible from the rear of building are covered with a steel grid planted with greenery to provide privacy and dappled natural light to the interior.

Each townhouse showcases an open spiral staircase which contrasts with the straight lines of the building. The elegant curves both soften the minimalist interiors and add a bold central feature to the main living space.

It is proposed that three of the five townhouses include rooftop terraces providing additional entertaining spaces with views back towards the city.

Our view is that Stephen Street stands out as an exceptionally sensitive and considered approach to maximising the enjoyment of urban townhouse living.
