The overarching objective of client, architect and builder was to encapsulate the beach side character of the local area through the considered use of materials, colours and form. At the same time, Mancini Made aimed to capture and frame water views from as many of the apartments as possible.
Sargood Street blends the natural characteristics of selected materials, paired with bright coastal whites, soft deep charcoals and light timber highlights. The built form references the local vernacular with sharp-edged boxed forms broken up by multiple textures and vertical screening elements.
The extended balconies that define each level present a bold linear design externally, balanced by intricate detailing in lobbies and apartment interiors. Permeable balcony screening successfully addresses issues of overlooking between apartments and neighbours, while allowing for extended bay views, natural light and sea breezes.
Glazing is deliberately excluded from the northern perimeter – which faces onto a carpark – softened by a playful patchwork of vertical and horizontal panels.
Internal spaces are contemporary and intentionally paired back, with high ceilings, plenty of storage facility and homely features such as inbuilt study nooks and gas-flame fireplaces. Trim clean-lined kitchens combine every amenity with minimalist styling and precision joinery.
The client describes the end result as a truly flagship Altona apartment that has locals complimenting the blend of perfect location and visual appeal. For Mancini Made, one of the most satisfying aspects of the Sargood Street project was the successful collaborative relationship between their team as builders and ClarkeHopkinsClarke as architects.
