Selbourne nominated in the Think Brick Awards

This September, Mancini Made build, Selbourne, was nominated for the ‘Horbury Hunt Residential Award’ in this year’s Think Brick Awards. Think Brick Australia represents Australia’s clay brick and paver manufacturers, an industry which is worth $2.8 billion and employs over 30,000 people.

The Think Brick Awards reward innovation and craftsmanship and recognise the important contributions that architects, builders, bricklayers, block layers and manufacturers make to the process of creating outstanding residential and commercial projects.

Located on a corner site amidst smaller period housing stock that predominately features brickwork, the proposal for Selbourne sought to take advantage of the aspect afforded by the site and to follow the local tradition of constructing brick buildings. However, the intention in this instance was to show how traditional brick forms could be presented in a minimalist and monochromatic fashion, placing emphasis on form and the monolithic application of bricks to create a discernible architectural presence.

A monochromatic palette was employed to highlight the design’s geometric qualities. The application of white and black bricks to the primary or most geometrically regular elements of the dwelling provided a pristine formal base to the structure. The application of these particular bricks established a discernible footprint that then served as a platform for the addition of black standing seam metal panels
